in BC are also like a credit card but smooth. They have hallograms on them and things to prevent counterfit but the cards are apprently lazer printed and have a magnetic stripe. Our medical cards in BC are like a credit card with the raised numbers and they also have a magnetic stripe but no hollogram(they'd probably be easy to counterfeit if anyone really tried but I don't think anyone does). Our SIN cards aka social insurance cards are flat with numbers printed on it and no magnetic strip or hollograms(again they'd probably be easy to fake if someone ever tried). All are made out of plastic like a credit card. However our birth certificates are paper and similarly protected like currency(stuff they put in the paper/print). However if you laminate them it renders them an invalid document. My birth certificate though dates from before they brought in the paper ones so it too is plastic but in the sense its laminated.(I forget when they brought in the paper ones but they've had them at least since the 90's when my kids were born).

Personally I dislike it when they make ID cards for important things just paper or glorified cardboard. They don't stand up well and then you have to get replacement ones. The cards I have that are laminated or plastic though do quite well. Even my "points cards"(for grocery stores... they earn you free stuff though I suppose track your spending habbits) are made of plastic.(though granted some like my rogers video card, zellers/hbc points card, and save-on grocery card are "thin")
