that numbers correspond to their place in the alphabet and there is no reason for that to be the case. In fact it is obviously not the case as you have just pointed out. Composite numbers could still be the basis of the code though (it is the most likely possibility) as 18 could just as easily be an f as an r.

I haven't done any work on this code for the past two days but when I left it I was using digram frequencies and the assumption that any given letter is likely to appear more than once to figure out the correct way of dividing it up. If you go back a few days I left a post somewhere with a good bit of analysis, I haven't done anything beyond that yet though.
