it was the ants marching that got me onto that (it's a Discworld thing - the wizards sort of built a computer where the basic computrons were ants running through glass tubes, allowing it to have a sticker saying 'Anthill Inside' on it...)... it could possibly be hex if the tokens were carefully chosen to not involve the alpha elements of the alphanumeric codes, which would cut down the total number of letters available for encoding. Not entirely sure if that's right or even along the right lines...
