I may not be an American (I've never been there... in fact, I've never been in Berlin, too), but let me tell you one thing:
Every culture has it's rituals. An American (USA) thinks it is polite to tell the other one "I love your { country | city | house | appartement }, I think it's great!" (I can only tell from the people I actually met).
The people in Northern Germany would say, it's polite in those cases to tell "Nett hier" (it's nice here).
So: just think of it as part of your culture. It's better than taking it as if you deserved it. Now _that_ could be in some cases offending.
