Americans, for the most part, thank appropriately. They don't say sorry anywhere near enough though.

I used to work in a tourist stop up the west coast, where American boaters were 90%+ of the customers. Aside from dumb questions like "Do you take real money here?" and "Is there a road to this island?" I had no problem with them. They thanked me enough (but tipped very little).
