yes I've heard several intresting things in translations over. Though my kids relatives from Hong Kong speak pretty good english... It's some of the older family members like their grandparents(ye ye ma ma) and great grandma (bot bot) that have made them go huh? Though I've also had them giggle at my odd word choices in cantonese at times. Such as when I said "no go si ji gung - Do nay ma ma - n jing koey" Ah hem do nay like many chinese things has more than one meaning I ment "throw you" as in my son said "I'm going to throw you" then did it. But my chinese cousin in laws I was meeting over dim sum for the first time well their jaws dropped because of the "other" meaning of that phrase. It and when I said "no gung a si go hunan" had them giggling for awhile on my learning cantonese. I tried to say I speak a little chinese/cantones. What I ended up saying was "I speak about small chinese people." When they started giggling(I had answered the phone "wai?" aka hello) I said "no hai n low fun" aka To explain why I couldn't speak it right.(Low fun is slang for honkey so I've been told<shrug>) Anyways I should of said "no gung ho nito jung yan." Some words in chinese also are english words though mean something diffrent and I found the sentence structure reminded me of french.<shrug> I'm trying to get my son to learn more chinese. He claims he doesn't know what people are saying ... he does too he just can't respond in chinese(though oddly his french isn't too bad and he's grown up around people constantly speaking cantones at his dads). I figure soon I'll just try to get him doing some of the writing or least reading it. /me Disclaimer: yes I know some will be able to translate what I said in cantonese and know the other possible meaning of the phrase. However as my original intent was not the "other" meaning I've not starred out letters. Also keep in mind diffrent intonation can give each chinese word several meanings. It took me also a little while to get the intonation reasonable.
