when i first started at my current job, it was a completely windows 2k environment. since then, we got a shiny new unix firewall which i have since turned into more than a firewall. slowly but surely, my boss is seeing the usefulness of unix. and the major bonus for him is the price. (mind you i'm not paid enough to question either)
Besides, when I compare developing for unix with developing for windows i find a huge contrast. Windows development stresses me out because at any level, you're not really sure HOW that stuff works, so if something doesn't go the way you expect, you're digging through reams of documentation to figure out how all the different parts interact in your situation. In unix, developing is a joy, because it consists of a bunch of relatively small separate components and the glue required to connect them. you can write some pretty useful little shell scripts in under 1K.
and my job is fun again! |
