diary plug (again): what do you think? by ma petite2006-11-19 12:55:59
Once again, people see consequences as problems. by huitzilopochtli2002-06-20 09:19:29
junk food is not an addiction by ma petite 2002-06-20 10:01:08
i have to disagree with most of what you said...

I this case coke, junk food or soda are not the real problems. Not even obesty. All those are just the consequeces of lack of understanding.
I sometimes wonder do those people even know what freedom is. They all seem to use that term and they all seem to have their own, correct of course, view of it. But there is only one freedom. So, which view is right? Freedom is not in doing everything you want and possesing everything you want. Freedom is in willing to give and disclaim for good of society as a who
what? since when? being able to decide for yourself is freedom dearie
That is why laws exist. And that is why laws, despite common belief, do not constrain our freedom but, in fact, wieden it. Not all laws, of course. Only when all and every cicizen is willing to accept laws (if they serve to society) and live by them freedom can be achived. That is the purpose of diffrent coutries. You can't subdue whole world to the same laws. Diffrent nations have diffrent views on life, diffrent things they need and diffrent things they are willing to disclaim.

Now, back to current problem.
You do not become free if you are given the ability (assuming you can afford it) to drink and eat whatever you want. Niether do you become free if you are forbiden to drink some drinks and eat some food. You are free when you CAN, willingly, constraint yourself of excessive consuption of those products. If you fail to do so you become slave of, for example, junk food. All those "obese Americans" are, in fact, slaves.

obese people are not slaves... that's plain silly... they choose what to eat... and again your idea of freedom is warped with responsiblity... there's a difference...

Here we come to the term of slavery. Slaves are people controled by their master. In history most of those masters have been other humans but today it can be anything. Money above all. Let's explain on our example: junk food. You do not have genetical preference (well, extremly small number of people may have, way less then 26%) to be fat. You begin with preferences. You like this food more than that food. Then it grows to custom (or vice). You eat hamburger on every possible occasion, even when you're not hungry. Finally, you become addicted to junk food, become the slave of hamburgers. You HAVE to eat a hamburger no matter what.
i don't know a single person who is addicted to hamburgers... not a single person who HAS to have a hamburger no matter what... and you become just as fat if you eat healthy food in the same quantities as junk food... the problems isn't just in what you eat, but how much you eat... and a big big part is also lack of exercise... another problem is in people who medicate their problems with food, depression for example... these people have deeper problems...

We may argue on how to solve that problem and we would, again, be solving consequences, not real problems. Real problem and question is: how do people become addicts of junk food (or addict of anything). Answer lies in education. Not only at school, but home. Laws cannot control that. Every family has its own customs.

That shows incapability of goverment to use power given to it for the good of society which gave it that power. One of the things i like in Star Wars is shown here. Jedis (forgive me the misspelation) and politicians are similar. They both have power. Is SW there is The Good Side and The Dark Side. Similar is in politics. Dark side is more powerul (greedy politicians are more wealthy) then the good side. Dark side is easier (you have only one person to think of - you - instead of countless people) that the good side. And finally, with power comes the responsibility. Responsibility most politicians are not willing or able to take.

If you want to solve problems of comunity you first have to solve problems of goverment. I may not be very popular because of this belief but every soceity should have ONE man on top with only one limitation to his power. Choice of his/hers succesor.

only one limit to his power? so you think the president (whoever that may be) should be able to do whatever he wants?
That should be left to wise and, above else, rghteous people.
and who would these "wise and righteous people" be? who decides that?
That way they would choose somebody who will be able to take responsibility which comes with power. Note that by soceity i mean one culture with something common to all its population. That excludes war and desire to take over other civilisations.

I seem to have lost the topic somewhere, but i said what i think and i will respect your opinion as long as you can argument and properly express it.
