Words gain new meanings, and eventually come to mean new things. The most glaring example of this is "gay" - it's hardly ever used to mean 'happy' anymore. I think it's important to keep up with what words mean at the time you use them (or meant, if you're writing from the past), but not so much the roots of words. It may be interesting to some, but hardly critical for proper use of the language. Proper use is determined by the masses, remember.
