...since I was a member of the SSS. (Simplified Spelling Society - in UK) but if I recall, the US spelling was an organised effort to modernise English spelling. That was yonks ago before they became the most spelling-reform-reactive english-speaking nation in the world (I'm paraphrasing here again, I think!). I actually prefer most of the US spellings, except that HORRIBLE DISGUSTING ABBOMINATION, the 'ize'. Just don't get me started, okay? And DL has already pulled me up on my attrocious spelling, (not helped by my lack of a chorded keyboard at present) but that's common amongst the hyper-creative ;-)
