Plus, "mediaeval" has three vowels in a row, and that just looks bizarre if you're reading modern English.

It's not abuse. It's progress. The language is evolving. You don't pronounce the now-missing letter, and it serves no modifying purpose as silent E's do, so why bother having it in the word?
