| While I know that it is common practice these days in English to remove diphthongs, it really shouldn't be done; after all, mediAEval comes from the Latin "medium aevum," which is literally "middle age." AnAEsthesia, archAEology, and palAEontology are other words (albeit with Greek roots, IIRC) wherein we similarly remove the diphthong.
Forgive me for this mini-rant, and call me anal if you wish. It just strikes me as further abuse of a much-abused language.
Of course, if the Normans just stayed in Normandy in 1066, this might not be an issue anyway.... |
