I know, "dogs have masters, cats have staff" and the likes. But for "once" cats could be used. Especially black ones: they impersonated "evil", but at the same time gave the "witch" a "kind of cute" helper. As to "helper": the cats didn't "help" at all when the witches had to face prosecution, but thàt's part of the "cats have staff" saying.
