Hmm The judges were out on this one but the question statet west atlantic so.. the correct answer would be Captain Carlsen on the flying Enterprise. The ship was hit by a storm and the crew abandoned ship - except the captain who remained on the ship for 14 days while the list got progressively worse. When at last the list reached 90 degres the Captain and a crew member from the tow boat who had joined the captain, just walked of the mast onto the water to get clear of the sinking ship :)
