SCSI help? by tms1791 2002-06-19 09:58:01
I'm having trouble getting a new tape drive running in a server here. I'm not real strong with SCSI... anyone that can help will get a big THANKS and good karma. :)

We're using a dual-channel Adaptec controller, with an internal/external LVD connector and internal connectors for U/UW devices.

The configuration that I inherited has an external RAID5 box connected to the external LVD connector, with an ACTIVE terminator at the end of the cable in the RAID box. Inside the server, there's a single HD attached to the LVD connector, also with an ACTIVE terminator at the end of the cable. There was a tape drive attached to the 50pin connector, terminated via jumper. This all worked just fine.

The tape drive died.

We've bought a new drive, which has an LVD interface. My first thought was to move all the stuff terminated with an ACTIVE terminator over to the UW connector, and attaching the LVD tape to the LVD connector. So I found a cable that will give me an external connector from the internal interface, plugged everything up appropriately and powered up - no go. NT4 either froze during the blue boot-up screen or gave me a BSOD. I've tried various other configs, including putting everything on the LVD connector with the ACTIVE terminators, but that also crapped out.

I see a bunch of errors in the event log ("The driver detected a controller error on \Device\ScsiPort0"). The card has been replaced once a while ago because of errors like this, and the errors stopped, so I'm assuming that the card's still good and that the problem is with the configuration. Before I go and order another card just to troubleshoot with, I need to verify that the drive configuration is completely correct.

Thanks In Advance for any help y'all can offer,
Steve
