I've only ever owned Nokia phones. My previous 3210 was great, but I had to replace it when the screen broke. The 7110 I'm on now has some great features (like the scroll button), but the connection to the microphone on the sliding key cover is starting to wear out. As a result you can get some terrible crackling on the line when talking. Also it doesn't quite come out far enough so that a couple of the keys are quite difficult to get to.
Regarding the operator, I know you're in the States, so there's not much point me recommending Orange. Just look for one that doesn't completely stiff you on the text messaging charges and you can become an addict like me. :-)
