Basically, I've never had a real need for one. When I was on-call, it would have been nice so that I wouldn't have to go looking for a payphone to return the page but I wasn't about to use a personal cell phone just for work. The only other time I felt I could have used one was when I was in Boston a few weeks ago and trying to hook up with a friend and it would have made tracking each other down a bit more easy but he had a cell that I could call him on so it didn't matter too much. I actually contemplated one the other day, looked at prices and such and decided that it really wouldn't be all that useful at this time, and it would simply be an added expense that I just don't need. I don't need to spend the 40 bucks or so a month so why should I? I will be carrying a cell in a few months for work - perhaps my opinion will change but I doubt it. The only advantage I've seen is the nationwide long distance coverage (I don't have long distance on my phone, instead I use calling cards).
All this from someone who has had friends email him to go do something because I was online and the phone was tied up :) |
