if you happened to be doing math. I had a prof that decided to test the optimizations on a FORTRAN compiler once. He wrote a program to do some weird calculation that took the program several hours to complete but never did any output. On the highest setting, the compiler took almost 10 hours to finish but the program ran almost instantly. Since the calculated value was never used the optimizer reduced the entire program to one command...exit.
