The sound quality of WinAmp decreased dramatically since they changed from the AMP engine (because of a lawsuit) to their own NullSoft engine. Often, if you listen to an MP3 in WinAmp where the hihats sound like they're made of water, and then listen to the same file with AMP for Linux, you will hear that the mangeled hihats gets their "body" back. While the sound in WinAmp is flappy and uncontinous, it's whole and smooth in AMP. And this has nothing to do with treble. Both engines sound quite similar on that front. Of course, it's easier to hear the difference with a couple of headphones.
You will actually find old decoder DLLs for WinAmp on the net. The difference is quite noticable if you have your ears with you. If you mistake a synthesizer for a true symphony orchestra, forget trying to compare two MP3 players.
And by the way: Use LAME because it's free and is as good and sometimes better than the Fraunhofer L3ENC! BladeEnc and most others suck! High speed usually means low quality. Low speed means high quality. |
