It may come as rather a surprise, but codeine is quite easily available in combination with acetaminophen (paracetamol) and caffeine. You have to ask the pharmacist for it, and if you come back too often they might refuse to give it to you, but you don't need a prescription. The dosage is too low to give much euphoria (unless you take enough to give you a toxic dose of acetaminophen -- that's one of the reasons why they combine the two) but it is quite effective as a painkiller.
