but a suburb of New Orleans has been called "Fat City" for years and it was the source of some the best and coolest New Orleans Jazz sounds. In Jazz to be designated "Fat" and I do believe the respelling to "Phat" may actually have begun in Jazz, was an honorable designation of truly cool Jazz. I don't know that it was thus spread into pop-culture, but I would believe that it did. Maybe Ma Petite could give us better sources as I was only in the area a couple years.
