Of course they are.
They tried it with J++, but if only to prove that Java 'isn't a good programming language' (notice that J++ isn't around anymore).
So why not try to force their own music encoding standard and try to screw with others. It's the way they do business. If they can't buy it, they make it 'incompatable' with their own software, then say how bad it is.

The Microsoft coders aren't "bad coders", they know exactly how to 'break' their software just right.
