...can't the states of countries with United in them agree on anything? ;-)

China doesn't have voting because the govt believes the people are too ignorant to choose leadership that will benefit them. I look at the US and my home country Australia and feel they may have a point! :-(

Of course the better answer is to educate the people, and not (as the Aust Govt has done) teach them (in the state schools curriculum, no less - I'm talking Queensland specifically here - I've seen the leaked draft documents and compared to the published) incorrect things about the electoral system so they think that in a prefferential system a 'vote for a minor party is a wasted vote'! A good way to keep power centralised to the two largely indistinguishable major parties.

I think we should scrap political-parties. Every vote should be a conscience vote and every significant vote of an MP should be publicised when they are going for re-election. There is no legal reason this couldn't be done right now! The Aust parliament was originally set up without the concept of political parties.
