There are a lot more ways to get viri than just email. Installing software that you've downloaded, or even gotten off of a CD. Accidentally booting your PC while an infected floppy is in the drive. The occasional worm than manages to drop a payload into your system. The CPU and memory usage for an antivirus program is pretty trivial these days. Trivial enough that you won't even notice the difference. Most people never even come close to using all their computer's horsepower anyway.
