On the full page, we cut top level posts to 500 chars. on the thread displays we don't cut at all. So if you go to http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/reply.cgi?id=20020617 the top level posts are cut to 500 chars. http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/reply.cgi?id=20020617&tid=325192 has no cut at all, because its the sub thread display.
