It's a blanket term for both ruhypnol and GHB, both of which can be added to a drink without being tasted or seen. The effects of them are complete unconsciousness that lasts a few hours, and they're usually given by someone who's after some protest-free sex. This, I'm guessing, is why roofies are called the date-rape drug.
