I am neither pro life, nor pro choice.
I never said anything about abortion not being without risks, or that it should be done casually or without regard for any medical factors.
I think you will find that most of the deaths attributed to poor abortions occurred because the abortionist was not a licensed physician, or was not practicing in an appropriate venue.
Making abortion illegal would simply increase these types of death, but then, we weren't discussing the legality of abortion, but the morality of it.
You seem to think that all these possible risks are worth more than the possible benefits of abortion, and that there is never a situation where abortion should be considered.
I am saying there are times when the risks of continuing are higher than the risks associated with abortion. When the damage done to a woman is going to be worse if the pregnancy is carried through than if it is aborted. That there may be times when abortion makes sense.
I am NOT saying everyone should be allowed to just get an abortion whenever they feel like it, or that it should replace birth control, or even that it is the best way out of all situations.
Abortion is more traumatic than having a child. Pff. How much more traumatic is it than being beaten, having a knife held to your throat and then being sexually assaulted by some smelly cretin? How about how much more traumatic is it than reliving that nightmare everytime you look in the mirror?
Gee, I'd rather deal with that than take a chance on not having children later on. So I guess that whole chance of infertility thing must be pretty darned critical, huh?
And gee, I'd rather deal with that trauma every day for the rest of my life than take a chance of increasing my risk of breast cancer, even if I've already HAD kids and your comments about stopping the changes in undeveloped breasts are irrelevant.
And then you cap it off for me. All but (and you put it in caps, so I wouldn't miss it, thank you) VERY FEW are done for the life of the mother.
Have I ever said that they should be popular? I don't think so.
Read my posts, and what I said about abortion, and how it should be used. It is a last resort (or should be.)
My comments (and my whole point) referred to the belief that abortion should NEVER be performed, which is wrong, in my opinion. You just stated that it is sometimes needed to save the mother's life. So I ask you again, "Are you saying that there are NO conditions under which an abortion should be performed?"
Any time you say _never_, or _always_, you should count on being wrong.
Unless of course, you believe that God defines our destinies and everything that happens is his will, including the moment of death, in which case, why aren't you out skydiving without a parachute? |
