the Church was never designed to be that.
Of course, the Spanish Inquisition and the Witch trials pretty much turned out like that, but it isn't the fault of the faith, but of the people who were in charge.

These days the Church is much better about helping people out, I agree. See my post to Sehmket about how strongly I feel about this issue.

I have to say though, that I have issues with your statement that the Church is not so darned ignorant on things. This is the same Church that is against abortion, as well as against birth control, and sex education, all in the same breath.
We probably shouldn't discuss the statement made recently about allowing priests who have 'only' molested one child to keep positions in the Church, as I am not up to speed on the latest developments there.
