man, i hate having jury duty by sketcher2002-06-16 11:22:04
  Now, I can't speak for Texas, but by Schol-R-LEA;2 2002-06-16 15:52:18
in both Connecticut and California, you have to call the night before to determine if they will be calling you up that day, and if you aren't selected on the first day (CA) or week (CT), you're excused for the following year. Also, AFAIK, in every state in the US, the initial call-up is for jury selection, which can take place days or even weeks before the trial itself.

Also, IIUC, if you have heard *anything* about a trial, beyond the fact that the event in question occurred at all, then you are automatically disqualified as being prejudiced on the case. This is one of the reasons that jury selection in a heavily publicized case can take months to work itself out; it can be hard just finding eligible jurors, even before the rest of the voir dire process begins.

IANAL, and I may have some of these 'facts' wrong, but this is my undertanding of the issues. I have no idea what you'd need to do to get a medical excuse in Texas, but if it is not a permanent condition, it would likely only be a delay rather of you service rather than an excusal.
