Being a Geek, I Probably Should Know This, But. . by GeekPrincess2002-06-16 12:05:17
  Mine's on 24/7 by klaatu 2002-06-16 12:30:26
Lets me schedule stuff, etc. And I figure that Windoze has to be restarted frequently enough in the middle of when I'm trying to do something that the rebooting/cleansing effect of turning it off isn't necessary.

One thing I do like to do, though, is have it go into standby after a half hour or so of inactivity. Reduces energy consumption a bit, and lets it cool off.

As far as fans wearing out, I've replaced exactly one computer fan due to wear-out. And it was in a computer that's been on 24/7 with little break for nearly 6 years (Yeah, it's old. But it's still ticking just fine). The fan still worked, but its bearing made wonderful squeaking noises.

Hackers can be a real concern. But there's this thingy I saw the other day in a catalog that has a button to enable your broadband internet, and shuts it off after an hour if you haven't pushed the button again. Looks interesting.
