Decide if you want your 'domain' to be run by WINS or by DNS. If WINS, start debugging that.

If you go with DNS you might want your domain name to be a fully-qualified domain name. I've run into this problem with Win2k and Active directory - windows is looking for a '.dot-something' after the 'home' name.
Start up your DNS and create a forward and reverse lookup zone for 'home.local' or something and make that name your domain name.
