the OS is hacked so that it runs a data file as if it were an executable? I mean, they're all just 1s and 0s anyway. The only thing that matters is how they're interpreted. AFAIK, there's no reason that an OS couldn't be hacked so that it tries to execute certain data files (images, for instance). Then, if some real executable code (as opposed to the garbage code that the data would be seen as) gets embedded (in the right spot) in one of those data files and the file was opened, the OS would run the code.
