and not "how many":

By measuring the red and blue shifts in the stars spectra while it and the planet "orbit each other". The planet moves the star slightly, making in move towards us or away from us, giving shifts of the light spectrum emitted by the star.
Another method that is much less common is by occultaion of the star, the decrease of luminosity is measured as the planet moves in front of the star.

new question: why is only a minimum mass of a extrasolar planet calculable(sp?), and not the absolute mass? (This one can be anwser by thinking about my answer to the last question, if you don't already know it).
