What about "reaction mass" then? by Beorn2002-06-14 00:27:42
Reaction mass. by breezeblock 2002-06-14 01:20:35
Aircraft move through air by pushing against it or pulling through it. ie propellers "pull" an aircraft through the air and jets "push" an aircraft against it. Spaceships dont have any air to push against so what they do is throw some of its own mass away from itself (usually as a compressed gas). the mass goes one way and the ship goes the opposite way. This mass is called reaction mass.
