What is yat'?
Imagine "myagkij znak". Now put a crossbar across the upper half. That is yat'. Very similar in appearance to "tverdij znak", but has been removed from the cyrillic alphabet.

Now that I am thinking about it, not all nouns used to end with the tverdij znak. One word of particular interest is "Mir". As you know in modern Russian it means both "peace" and "world". But in the old Russian, where the words ended with "tverdij znak" only one of the two meanings would have that letter at the end, so there was no ambiguity as to what "Mir" meant in the title. Sadly I do not remember which way it was.
