One of the projects I've considered doing was to take that old joke literally. ENOS - the EMACS Native Operating System - was an idea I had as a kind of proof-of-concept work that would allow me to ~~steal~~adapt an existing, complete user environment that is reasonably close to the one I intend to eventually design, as a way of refining my low-level coding skills. I'd write a small kernel that would provide just enough of a low-level support to build the remaining system in ELISP, in much the same way the ALTO Smalltalk and UCSD Pascal systems were done. While it is just an idle idea to date, it was one of the possible directions I could go in.
