my sister once about my nephew. She was hassling him for wearing a black trench coat and dressing like neo from the matrix for awhile. He also listens to alternative music but luckily she leaves him alone on that. He likes MTG and RPG's and she thinks that that will make him some wacko combined with the other stuff and he'll do something crazy. Also that it will make him some devil worshiping nutball. I asked her if she trusted in how she raised her son. I also pointed out her like of Alice Cooper and similar when she was younger. My sister looked reasonable as a teen appearance wise for what was commonly worn. I reminded her I dressed alternative as a teen. Picture "Desperately Seeking Susan" as in how Madonna dressed combined with Billy Idol, etc. Anyways it got noticed and luckily not in a bad way most people liked my fashion sense though found it odd(and yes I wore alot of black, spandex based things like 3/4 length skirts/leggins/and minis). I also listened to various alternative music back then. I was also working doing lots of volunteer stuff as a tutor and also in the hospital. I pointed out he's a good boy and so what if he looks diffrent he's not doing bad things or hanging with bad kids.
In talking to my nephew his feelings were hurt by his moms presumptions. Others he knew had some similar to do. But he's followed something that I've tried to teach him and that is it takes courage to be yourself... and its better to have people love you for who you are inside. As well diversity is beautiful. Though now I dress more conservative and maybe listen to little mellower stuff than I used to. I've tried to teach my kids tolerance/acceptance and also tried to stand up to people I saw being unfair to someone that was diffrent.
Btw my dad had a tatoo. Reason for it was he was in the Royal Navey in WWII so he had an anchor with a ribbon with some saying on it. Also I know at least one nurse at canuck place that has a tatoo as well as some parents there had tatoo's of their childs name. People have tatoo's for a variety of reasons.
Also I knew two people that were in satanic cults/churches. One got out and she had no tatoos that I'm aware of. The other did but it was by choice and I don't think for some religious reason. I also know christians and people of other faiths that have them. Also alot of religions have a specific colour. Buddists I think their monks wear red or orange. Christian priests wear black. To some beliefs "white" has the same meaning as black does in other cultures. So hmm satan worship has to do with wearing black? I bet the christian priests wouldn't be amused to have that comment aimed at them.
Anyways more power to you for standing up to the woman. And you should of mentioned having a closed mind and lacking tolerance is more dumb than your simply having a tatoo or wearing dark cloths. Or for that matter what music you listen too.(btw there are several christian heavy metal bands. Though I'm not overly religious I did listen to Stryper for awhile which I found to be quite good... and no they don't necisairly mention god alot but then other metal bands christian or not don't necisarily either) |
