I coulda sworn Dickens and Bronte were Gothic. (Silas Marner is the only book from the 'period' that I really thought had a happy ending.)

I have read Iliad and Odyssey, as well as Bachea and Medea (great plays) and several other of the greek greats. That wasn't until I took honors classes in college though.

I think the your last paragraph is a pretty accurate description of the 'required reading' in US highschools. I wish they would encourage at least one 'fun' book a month. Just to encourage reading. Even if it is fluff. Harry Potter, Stephen King, Jean Auel ... requiring essay format book reports on them would help teach students to write by letting them write about something they might actually be interested in.
