War and Peace by evilpenguin2006-11-19 12:55:59
Sure, let's listen to the effete "literary" snob by Naruki 2002-06-13 09:26:51
with all the spelling/grammar deficiencies. ;)

I started to read that book once because an English teacher of mine (who was the sort of person that says "litrature") used to brag about having done so after dint of much effort. I wished to prove that she really had little to boast about.

After about a week on it, I had gotten a little more than 1/3 of the way through it. Then I came to a realization: I would rather watch snails run a marathon. Oh, sure, I would have polished it off in another couple of weeks, but the whole point of reading is not to prove you can do something (especially not to prove you do it better than another). The point is to enjoy the story.

Gods, what a boring piece of crap that was.

If you are interested in war and Russian history, I recommend it - you already have the mindset to appreciate the story, and it is quite well-translated. But otherwise, avoid it like the plaque (you know, that stuff that gets on your teeth if you don't use the right kind of toothpaste).
