| I must disagree with you; I think Jane Austen is worth reading. She mostly avoids the overdone sentimentality of many books popular at the time, and when it does appear, she is mocking it. Her characters are well-rounded people, and while the main characters generally get a happy ending, the road to that ending is rough, and the subordinate characters often wind up in hells of their own devising.
Plus, I like the way she lampoons the whole Gothic-horror genre in general, and The Mysteries of Udolpho in particular, in Northanger Abbey. If your revulsion to P&P hasn't soured her books for you permanently, give it a look. |
