to be honest my own opinion ...
i read W&P over Christmas break once (after many false starts) and it was long - confusing and well - i never actually finished it - i got to the last 40 some odd pages and gave up because even tho the plot, the action was completely over, no one told tolstoy he just kept on writing. i once heard a jazz musician say (when asked how to end a song) "take the trumpet out of your mouth." I'm convinced that Tolstoy did not know how to put the pen down. Tolstoy simply cannot write long works of fiction - my opinion is that any book which requires a cast list from the very beginning is probably more complicated than it needs to be. That Tolstoy spouts off his own bizaar philosophy as well does not help matters either. My opinion is that a good example of long, intricate fiction would be Victory Hugo's Les Miserables. It really only has 3 main characters with several supporting characters. As involved as it gets - the story never looses sight of these characters. I think there's simply too much going on in W&P. That said tho Tolstoy can write well, but on shorter works. "Note from a Madman" (I think thats the name but I'm not sure) is a very good short work. I tried other Russian literature but couldn't get into it for some odd reason. Maybe someday :)
