...taught that good literature had to be serious. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was actually required reading for one of my classes! Yeah, we were force-fed the usual Shakespeare, Dickens, and Poe, but we did have other lighter things to read as well.
By the way, it ain't really the schools that teach that good literature must be serious, it's the frustrated, unpublished, wanna-be-novelist hacks that teach many high-school and university literature courses... they feel the need to convince us of their own personal relevance, when we all know that they're just trying to convince themselves...
Mind you, there are plenty of teachers that aren't like that... those are the teachers that I was lucky enough to have had. ;) |
