Are exposed to to much gothic literature and told that these are the greats.
Sure Charles Dickens wrote somegreat books, but there is only so much depression a person can take. And the Bronte sisters are terribly morose. Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet are both downers. And the Scarlet Letter? Ooo yeah there's a happy book.
Now, how many teenagers are really interested in reading a lengthy depressing character driven Russian epic after that huge pile of bummers.
(And as I think back the junk I was forced to read in elementary was depressing too. The Yearling, Old Yeller, Johnny Tremane)
No wonder no one reads, all the schools teach that good literature must be serious. (Much like critics seem to think that most movies to be artistic must be serious.) Schools ought to include some of the works of Dumas, some modern 'light' fiction, Shakespeare's comedies. Then maybe their would be more interest in an occasional challange like Tolstoy.
(I havn't read any of the big Russian works, just a few shorter novels. I didn't care for them much, but if you say Tolstoy is character driven I might give it a try.) |
