War and Peace by evilpenguin 2006-11-19 12:55:59
Ever since I was a kid I've heard many a uneducated reference made to the massive tome that is War and Peace. It was always hyped up to be a volumous work, laudable only for its girth. Let me state right off that such foolishness couldn't be farther from the truth.

When I was 16 I started to get interested in Russian literature (through the works of Dostevesky). A year later, I decided to take on Tolstoy's legendary work -- partly as a challenge to myself, but mostly to see what all the hype was about. Now, I must admit, I was intimidated by the sheer size of the three-volume set that arrived on my doorstep. But nonetheless, I picked up the first book and began to read...

What I found in War and Peace was character development a level above anything I've ever read before. The plot grabbed hold of me and actually kept my attention throughout. When I finished the book after a few months of leasurly reading, it immediatly became clear to me just how nieve most people are when regarding this great work -- oft derided simply to get a cheap laugh.

Then again, most teenagers don't even read literature on their own (something of merit; not pop authors like Stephen King and Tom Clancy). Your milage may vary, should you decide to undertake Tolstoy's timeless classic. However, if you actually have the attention (span) to be bothered to do so in the first place, then indeed you will be rewarded.

But would I like to hear it read out loud? With Pitr's accent? I shudder at the thought.
