I think we are so accustomed to appending apostrophe 's' to indicate the posessive (that girl's shoe is really funky) that we type it out of habit.

(* I worked for a limited company with the acronym 'ITS'. It was spun off of the parent company for the usual reasons. "ITS Limited!" I exclaimed. I was right. The layoffs began 59 days after it spun off. *)
