Do We Speak/Write The Same Language? by nimdokk 2002-06-12 15:21:04
ok this is a minor rant. i don't normally correct people's grammer and spelling (especially on the internet) I've run into quite a few people at the various places that I've worked who seem to have a rather weak grasp of the English language (these people *are* native speakers - not those for whom English is a second language). I've read countless emails -- in business -- which contain copious mistakes in grammer (and sometimes in spelling) which of course make the message nearly unreadable. It strikes me that the biggest mistakes seem to be in verb tense and also mis-used prepositional phrases which seem to come more from a lack of attention being paid to what is written (or said) rather than ignorance of the correct forms and usage.

I can understand the occasional lapse when speaking in informal situations (such as talking around the water-cooler or what-have-you -- but in staff meetings?) I can also forgive an informal attitude in non-business emails and the like (I'm as guilty as the next person) but what I'm seeing is in "formal" business emails.

I could probably go on -- but work beckons :-) What are your thoughts on this little subject?
