that silicon has the exact same crystal structure as diamond, are you not? The lattice spacing is just a bit larger and the bonding a bit weaker. Now I'm assuming that you've made it through the package, which is most likely a ceramic. The silicon is a nice shiny grey in color, and only about 1cm sq and 0.5 mm thick...
