Actually part of my choice for nix being what it was had to do with availability as well. I had been on a dial up and wanted to try an nix to find something other than windows(and had heard great things on nix). At the library I only found books on slackware and redhat. Talking to others and surfing sites mandrake looked like the easiest to use for a newbie so I went with that. I didn't see much on BSD at all and wasn't able to find it in any of the local stores.(I wasn't sure where to download it either and on a 56K dialup that wasn't the most reliable downloadin it wasn't the greatest/most viable option) I have a few online friends I've known for years who use mandrake, some redhat, and one only afik uses BSD(FreeBSD). I also tried to familiarize myself with some nix by getting a virtual shell account before hand. I was also told by the "linux" side of people as well as the friend on BSD that the two though alike in some ways are also diffrent.(though the linux nix varients might vary more than the bsd varients of nix). Anyways I went with linux though as said will try BSD soon and then will see for myself the diffrences and similarities. Then I'll form an opinion on which I like of the two personally. Anyways for BSD I think they need to get it into stores more and make it more "there" so its as visible as linux stuff is. Maybe the advertising would make people more aware and people might choose diffrently what they run... who knows. Only thing I can say on the two diffrent *nix versions at the moment is I find the little Daemon cuter than tux. :) However I've not seen all the mascots to comment.(hmm wonder if there is a my fav martian mascot for one of them somewhere... hehehe) There should be UF distrib that would be cool. :)
