boy do I need help!!! by webishop 2002-06-11 12:18:49
After doing a re-install of Mandrake-Linux 8.1, I find that my X-system browsers are unable to see my dial-up connection. Mandrake’s configuration toolkit reports that there doesn’t seem to be a connection with the Internet, and perhaps I’d like to reconfigure my dial-up connection?

My /etc/hosts looks like:
192.168.1.1 madness.theLAN.com
192.168.1.2 mirrors.theLAN.com
192.168.1.3 smoke.theLAN.com

My dial-up is configured as:
TheISP
XXX.YYY.ZZZ.N_1
XXX.YYY.ZZZ.N_2
etc.

Once kppp has dialed into TheISP, “route” produces the following report:
XXX.YYY.ZZZ.N_7*255.255.255.255UH000ppp0
192.168.1.0*255.255.255.0U000eth0
127.0.0.0*255.0.0U000lo
defaultmadness.theLAN255.255.255.0UG000eth0

So this seems to be in order. When I try to telnet into XXX.YYY.ZZZ.N_7, I’m prompted for the password. This address also responds to pings, but the .N_1 and .N_2 addresses report “not accessible.” I’m not really a newbie, but I’m also not a guru. My gut tells me my problem is on the order of “did you turn it on?” But I’m missing whatever it is I’m supposed to have turned on. HELP!???
