...the most common (IME) being a "common tail merge".

Compiler optimizers do a pretty good job of catching these, in conditional trees and cases with a small number of branches; but eventually the compiler's own resource limitations (real or assumed) prevent this. Multiple, common tail sections on very large case structurs seem to be the quickest to foil them.
